「区別する」「見分ける」って英語で言うと？Part1の続きです。
■ distinguish – – （動詞）識別する、はっきり区別する、見分ける
■ distinguish A from B - – AとBを区別する、AとBを見分ける
■ distinguish between ～ - – ～を区別する、～を見分ける
彼女は経験から正規ブランド品と偽造ブランド品とを区別できる。
She can distinguish original brands from counterfeit brands by experience.
*「counterfeit」は、「偽造の、にせの、まがいの」という意味です。
人間と動物を区別するのは言語である。
It is language that distinguishes man from beasts.
*「beast」は、「獣、畜生、四足獣の動物」という意味です。
犬や猫は色を区別することができない。
Dogs and cats cannot distinguish between colors.
私はエミリーとレイラの区別がつきません。
I can’t distinguish Emily from Layla.
その女は空想と現実の区別がつかなくなった。
The woman couldn’t distinguish between fantasy and reality.
*「fantasy」は「空想」、 「reality」は「現実」という意味です。
アメリカ人とオーストラリア人を見分けるのはいつもやさしいとは限らない。
It is not always easy to distinguish the American from the Australian.
区別するの表現では、「tell」は文語的で「言い分ける、違いを言う」的なニュアンスです。対して、
「distinguish」は、やや文語的でそれらの違いを理解して「区別する」というニュアンスです。
