■ the most popular – – もっとも人気のある
彼は昨今、代表的な歌手である。
He is one of the most popular singers today.
ハロハロは、フィリピンの代表的なデザートです。
Halo Halo is the most popular desert in the Philippines.
ハローキティは、フィリピンで代表的なキャラクターです。
Hello Kitty is the most popular character in the Philippines.
「representative」は、「典型的な」というニュアンスの代表を表します。
「well known」は、「よく知られた」というニュアンスの代表を表します。
「the most popular」は、「もっとも人気がある」というニュアンスの代表を表します。
日本語の「代表」の意味は、使うケースで微妙に意味が異なりますので、上記の最も近いニュアンスを使うのが良いでしょう。日常では、「representative」よりも「well known」あるいは「the most popular」を使うケースが多いように思います。
