ニュースで「フィリピンで身柄を拘束された」というのがありました。逮捕ではなく、「(身柄を）拘束」は英語でどの様に表現するのでしょうか？早速、「拘束する」「拘束される」について調べました。
■ custody – – 保護、管理、拘留、拘置、強制収容、監禁

■ in custody / into custody – – 収監されて、 拘留中で
■ take into custody – – 拘束する、身柄を拘束する、保護する、収監する
そのバスドライバーは警察によって拘束された。
The bus driver was taken into custody by the police.
その指名手配犯は、逮捕されて身柄を拘束された。
The wanted criminal was arrested and taken into custody.
上司はコレラの疑いで空港で拘引された。

明確に「逮捕する」と表現する場合には動詞の「arrest」が使われることが多いようですが、逮捕に関わらず身柄を捕らえられて自由を奪われる場合には「take into custody」が使われることが多いようです。ただ、ニュースでは、正式な逮捕でない場合にでも法執行機関が身柄を拘束する場合には「arrest」が使われるケースもあります。
