「可能性が高い低い」って英語で言うと？Part2の続きです。
■ high chance – – 高い可能性
■ little chance – – 低い可能性
*「chance」は、「機会、見込み、成算」という意味です。
明日は雨になる可能性が高い。
There is a high chance that it will rain tomorrow.
あなたの症状は胃潰瘍の可能性が高い。
There is a high chance that your symptoms are gastric ulcer.
*「symptom」は、「症状、徴候」という意味です。
*「gastric ulcer」は、「胃潰瘍」という意味です。
私が教授に会える可能性は低い。
There is little chance that I will see the professor.
私のパスポートが見つかる可能性は低い。
There is little chance of my passport being found.
■ The chances ～ are high – – ～の可能性が高い。
■ The chances ～ are low – – ～の可能性が低い。
あなたは今夜彼女に会える可能性が高い。
The chances that you can see her tonight are high.
私はその試験に受かる可能性が高い。
The chances that I will pass the exam are high.
彼が借りた金を返済できる可能性は低い。
The chances that he can return money are low.
彼女の意見が受け入れられる可能性は低い。
The chances of her opinion being accepted are low.
私はうまく説明できませんが、単数形「chance」と、複数形の「chances」とが使い分けられています。
「probability」と「chance」では、「probability」の方が確率的に「chance」よりも高い表現となります。今回の「likely to」「probability」「chance」がうまく使い分けられると、英語レベルも少しアップしそうな気がします。
