英語の調べ物をしている時に、「I am willing to」という文章がありました。意思のwillなので、「～するつもり」という意味かと思いましたら、少しニュアンスが違っている様です。早速、「be willing to」について調べました。
■ be willing to – – する意思がある、いとわない、してもいいけど、するのにやぶさかではない
手伝ってあげてもいいですよ。
I am willing to help you.
彼は人のために働くことをいとわなかった。
He was willing to work for others.
私はその予定外の会議に出席してもかまいませんよ。
I am willing to attend the unscheduled meeting.
あなたは彼女に謝罪する気がありますか？
Are you willing to apologize to her?
あなた外国人と結婚する意思はありますか？
Would you be willing to getting married to foreigner?
あなたが一緒に行ってほしいのなら、喜んでご一緒しますよ。
I’m willing to go with you if you want me to.
あなたが協力してくれるのであれば、喜んでの計画に参加しますよ。
I’m willing to take part in the project if you cooperate.
その少年の両親が同意するならば、彼に奨学金を与えてもいいですよ。
I’m willing to grant the boy a scholarship if his parents agree.
「be willing to」は、「積極的に自分から進んでする、喜んでする」というよりは、「消極的に必要な場合にはする用意がある、してもいいです」というニュアンスです。「嫌々」「しぶしぶ」というニュアンスではありません。使い方を理解すると、いろいろと役に立つ表現ではと思います。特に「if～」とセットにするとわかり易い気がします。
「I’m willing to support him.」を、積極的な気持ちとして表現したい場合には、下記の様な表現を用いると良いかもしれません。
I want to support him.
I’m ready to support him.
I’m trying to support him.
I’ll be happy to support him.
I’d love to support him.
