「彼が参加することを確信しています。」と言う時に、「believe」「sure」「certain」など、どの様な表現が適当なのか、主語は何が良いのかなどを迷いました。早速、調べました。
■ be sure – – 確信する、 固く信じる
私はそのことは確信する。
I’m quite sure of that.
私はリリィの成功を確信している。
I’m sure of Lily’s success.
私の財務会計の報告書には事実の誤りはないと確信している。
I’m sure that there are no errors of fact in my financial statements.
彼は我が社の新規事業のために働いてくれると確信している。
I’m sure of his working for our new business.
彼は自分が成功すると確信している.
He’s sure he will succeed.
ジョシュアは自分の仕事が完了することを確信していた。
Joshua was sure of his work’s accomplishment.
サミュエルは事業に成功することを確信していた。
Samuel was sure of succeeding in his undertaking.
■ be certain – – 確信する
私はクロエが成功すると確信している。
I’m certain of Chloe’s success.
ソフィアは彼が来ることを確信している。
Sofia is certain of his coming.
私は彼の無罪を確信している。
I am certain of his innocence.
アリッサは彼が試験に合格するに違いないと思った。
Alyssa was certain that he would pass the exam.
あなたがテイラーを殺そうとしたのは確かである。
It’s certain that you were trying to kill Taylor.
ジョーダンがその職に就くことは確かである。
It’s certain that Jordan will get the post.
「sure」と「certain」の違いですが、「sure」は主観的判断や直観に基づいた確信であり、「certain」 は客観的事実や証拠などに基づく確信というニュアンスになります。「sure」は、「I firmly believe.（私は強く信じている。）」に近いニュアンスです。
また、「certain」は、「It is certain that～」 の構文で使えますが、「sure」は使えません。
