「ぎりぎり」「直前に」って英語で言うと?

「ぎりぎり間に合った」「直前にキャンセルされた」の様なニュアンスの表現を言いたい時が時々ありますが、あまりうまく言えません。早速、「ぎりぎり」「直前に」の表現について調べました。


■ at the last minute / at the last moment – – ぎりぎりに、直前に、土壇場で

妻は直前になって気が変わった。
My wife changed her mind at the last minute.

彼女は土壇場になって約束をキャンセルした。
She canceled the appointment at the last minute.

我々は直前になって計画を変更せざるを得なかった。
We couldn’t help but to change the plans at the last minute.


■ just in time / barely in time – – いよいよというときに、ぎりぎり間に合う、ギリギリ間に合う
*「barely」は「 かろうじて、わずかに、やっと」という意味です。

彼はギリギリ間に合うだろう。
He will be just in time.

私は終バスにぎりぎり間に合った。
I was just in time for the last bus.

娘は開演にぎりぎり間に合った。
My daughter was just in time for the curtain time.

アナと私は飛行機にすれすれで間に合った。
Anna and I was barely in time for the plane.


■ close – – (形容詞)きわどい,かろうじての,やっとの.

ぎりぎりだった。危機一髪だった。
That was close.

きわどいところをぎりぎり助かった。
I had a close shave.
*「close shave」は「危機一髪」という意味です。

私は今朝、ぎりぎり仕事に間に合った。
I was close to being late to work this morning.

息子はぎりぎり自転車と衝突するところだった。
My son was so close to crashing into a bicycle.


ぎりぎりの表現はまだまだありますが、割と使われる上記を覚えたいと思います。また、「almost」を使っても、かなり似たようなニュアンスを表現することができます。
