資源の話話をしていて、「あまり人間が資源を消費し過ぎるのは良くない。」と言いたかったのですが、「消費する」の表現が分かりませんでした。早速、調べました。
■ consume – – （他動詞）消費する、使い尽くす、食い飲み尽くす
*名詞形は「consumption」、形容詞形は「consumptive」、「consumer」は、「消費者」です。
私たちはそのレストランで昼食を摂る予定です。
We plan to consume lunch at the restaurant.
私は、ワイン 1 本を消費した。
I consumed a whole bottle of wine.
1 か月にお米をどのぐらい消費しますか？
How much rice do you consume a month?
森林は、酸素を作り二酸化炭素を消費する。
Forests produce oxygen and consume carbon dioxide.
ケーキ職人は毎日に数十の卵を使う。
Pastry chefs consume dozens of eggs every day.
*「dozens of」は、「幾ダースも、数十の、たくさん」という意味です。
また、下記の様な表現もご紹介しておきます。語源に応じた選択が必要となるのでしょう。
新商品の開発に多大の時間と労力を掛けた。
We expended much time and effort on the development of the new products.
ほとんどの時間を練習に消費した。
I spend most of my time practicing.
機械は多量の電気を消費する。
Machinery uses a lot of electricity.
ジョギングは、カロリーを消費するのに良い。
Jogging is a good way to burn off calories.
