孤児の話をしている時に、「政府や地方自治体がストリートチルドレンを保護するべきだ」と言う時に、「保護する」にどの動詞を使うか迷いました。「care」でも意味は通じますが、「保護する」の表現について調べました。
■ protect – – （動詞）保護する、防ぐ
私たちは、自然環境を保護しなければなりません。
We have to protect the natural environment.
あなたはそれが傷付かないように保護する。
You will protect that so it doesn’t get damaged.
あなたは泥棒から財産を保護しなくてはなりません。
You must protect your property from thieves.
弊社にとって個人情報を保護することは大切である。
It is important for us to protect personal information.
■ preserve – – （動詞）保存する、維持する、保つ、保護する、守る
私たちは希少動物を保護しなければならない。
We must preserve endangered animals.
*「endangered animals」は、希少動物と言う意味です。
市民団体が森林を保護する運動を起こした。
The citizens’ group started a campaign to preserve the forest.
環境庁はこれらの寺社仏閣を保護する予定である。
The Environmental Agency plans to preserve these shrines and temples.
■ guard – – （動詞）守る、護衛する、 警戒する、保護する、用心する
私の旅行中、彼が私の財産を保護するだろう。
He will guard my possessions during my journey.
私たちは彼のプライバシーを保護した。
We guarded his privacy.
take ～ under one’s protection – – ～を保護する
*「protection」は、「保護、援護、保護するもの」という意味です。
当老人施設は、貧しい老人たちの保護を引き受けよう。
Our institution for the aged will take poor old people under our protection.
政府や地方自治体がストリートチルドレンを保護するべきだ。
The national and local governments should take the street children under their protection.
