会話で「平均値は～」「平均より～」「平均的だと思う」という様に「平均」「平均値」という表現を時々使います。以前から、きちんとした文章で話すの難しいと感じていました。早速、「平均」「平均値」の表現について調べました。
■ average – – （名詞）平均、平均値、（形容詞）平均の、普通の、（動詞）平均する、平均をとる
彼女は平均的日本女性です。
She is an average Japanese women.
私は日本女性の平均身長より高い。
I am taller than average height of Japanese women.
私は 1 日平均１０時間働きます。
I average 10 hours’ work a day.
I work 10 hours a day on average.
このクラスの生徒の平均身長は170センチを越えている。
The average height of the students in class is over 170 centimeters.
顧客数は、平均で 1 日約200 人です。
The number of customers is about two hundred a day on average.
■ mean – – （名詞）平均、平均値、中間
■ the mean value – – 平均値
*「value」は、「数値」という意味です。

例題１：４つの数字の平均はなんですか？
Example 1: What is the Mean of four numbers?
平均温度は摂氏32です。
The mean temperature is 32 degrees Celsius.
*「degrees Celsius」は「摂氏度、セルシウス度」という意味です。
「mean」は、「意味する」という動詞ですが、「平均」という意味があるのは知りませんでした。
「average」と「mean」の違いについても調べました。「average」は日常で使う一般的な言葉に対して、「mean」は「数学用語」「学術用語」で「average」よりも算出した特定値を表す時に使われる様です。
