英語の調べ物をしている時に「This is by far the best.」という文がありました。意味は何となく理解できますが、「by far」の意味や使い方について調べました。

このスイカはその２つの中でだいぶ良い。
This watermelon is by far the better of the two.
このゲームはあれよりもずっとおもしろい。
This game is by far more interesting than that one.
これは断然良い。
This is by far the best.
このワインは群を抜いてよい。
This wine is by far the best.
マニラはフィリピンでずば抜けて一番大きい都市です。
Manila is by far the largest city in Philippines.
牛丼は日本で飛び抜けていちばん人気のある昼のメニューです。
Gyudn is by far the most popular lunch menu in Japan.
アレクシスはクラスの中で、断然歌がいちばんうまい。
Alexis is by far the best singer in the class.
クリスチャンは大学でずば抜けて頭のいい学生である。
Christian is by far the cleverest student in the college.
「by far」は、比較級を強める「ずっと、だいぶ」というニュアンスと、最上級をより強調して「断然、遙かに、ずば抜けて」というニュアンスがあります。「much」もほぼ同じニュアンスとして使うことができます。
