ダライ・ラマのいくつかの名言は心に響くものがあります。先日、ブラッド・ピット主演の実話である映画「セブン・イヤーズ・イン・チベット」をNetflixで観ました。ダライ・ラマの台詞で「If the problem can be solved, there’s no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved. worrying will do no good.」と言うのがありました。早速、意味などについて調べました。
日本語と英語の字幕では次のようになっていました。
「解決できる問題をあれこれ悩むのはムダ。解決できぬ問題を悩むのをムダ。」
“If the problem can be solved, there’s no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good.”
ダライ・ラマのこの台詞の語源は英語ではなかったようで、ネット上には上記以外のいろいろな英文があります。
“If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good.”
直訳「解決できる問題なら、心配しても仕方がない。解決できないなら、心配しても無駄だ。」
“If it can be solved, there’s no need to worry, and if it can’t be solved, worry is of no use.”
直訳「解決できるなら心配する必要はないし、解決できないなら心配しても無駄である。」
“If a problem can be solved than there is no need for worry. If it can not be solved there is no use worrying about it.”
直訳「問題が解決できるなら、心配する必要はない。解決できないなら、心配しても無駄である。」
“If there is no solution to the problem then don’t waste time worrying about it. If there is a solution to the problem then don’t waste time worrying about it.”
直訳「もし問題に対する解決策がないのであれば、それを心配して時間を無駄にするな。もし問題に対する解決策があるのなら、それについて心配して時間を無駄にするな。」
“If a problem can be solved it will be. If it can not be solved there is no use worrying about it.”
直訳「解決できる問題なら解決する。解決できないなら、心配しても仕方がない」
“If it’s not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.”
直訳「解決できないのであれば、心配しても仕方がない。心配しても何の得にもならない。」
次の英文は少し長いですが、ダライ・ラマの言いたかったことをわかりやすく表しているように思います。
“If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it’s not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.”
直訳「もし問題が解決可能なら、もし何かできるような状況なら、心配する必要はない。解決できないのであれば、心配しても仕方がない。心配しても何の得にもならない。」
