■ recession – – （可算名詞）景気後退，不景気
いまだ景気の低迷が続いています。
The economy is still in recession.
不景気が慢性化している。
We are in chronic recession.
世界はいま不況におちいっている。
The world economy is in recession now.
経済は景気後退期に入った。
The economy has entered a recession.
不況のため企業業績は悪化した。
Corporate results deteriorated because of recession.
■ depression – – （不可算名詞）不景気、不況
経済はやや不景気である。
The economy is in a slight depression.
今が不景気のどん底である。
We are at the bottom of the depression.
今が不景気のどん底にある。
The depression is at its worst.
商売はどこも景気が悪い。
The commercial depression is universal.
「recession」と「depression」の違いを調べました。
「recession」は比較的短期間や一時的な不況、景気の後退を表すのに対して、「depression」はやや長引く深刻な不況を表す様です。世界大恐慌は、「the Great Depression」と言います。
また、「depression」には、「意気消沈、憂うつ」の意味もあります。イメージ検索では、経済の不況ではなく、人が落ち込んでいるイメージが大半です。
