都知事選のニュースで「有力候補者」という表現がありました。英語でどの様に表現するのか迷いました。早速、「有力な」「有力候補者」について調べました。
■ influential – – （形容詞）勢力のある、有力な、権勢ある、影響を及ぼす
彼女は、新しい有力な下院議員です。
She is a new influential congresswoman.
それは、北京の有力紙だ。
It’s an influential newspaper in Beijing.
■ powerful – – （形容詞）勢力のある、有力な、強い、強力な
うちの社長は外国メディア業界に有力なコネクションを持っている。
Our president has a powerful connection in the foreign media industry.
PETAは最も有力なアメリカ動物権利団体の1つである。
PETA was one of the most powerful an American animal rights organization.
*PETAは「People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals」の略称です。
■ likely – – （形容詞）見込みのある、有望な、期待できる、ありそうな、本当らしい、もっともらしい
彼女は、有望なオペラ歌手です。
She is a likely opera singer.
彼は次期社長として最も有力とみなされている。
He is regarded as the most likely next president.
*「regard」は、「みなす、考える」という意味です。
*「prospect」は、「見込みのある人、有望な人」という意味です。
有力候補者の表現には下記のようなものがあります。「有力」を使わずにニュアンスを示してみました。
influential candidate – – 影響ある候補者
powerful candidate – – 力のある候補者
likely candidate – – 見込みある候補者
strong candidate – – 強力な候補者
potential candidates – – 可能性のある候補者
major candidate – – 主要な候補者
leading candidate – – 先導する候補者

都知事選の有力候補者に、どの表現でも使うことができそうですが、個人的には「３人の有力候補者」は「three major candidates」という表現が一番良いように感じました。
