前回、「（発言を）取り消す、撤回する」を調べている時に、「失言」という表現が目に止まりました。早速、「失言」「失言する」について調べることにしました。

■ make a (bad) gaffe – – 失言、失態
その政治家は失言を謝罪して、自の発言を撤回した。

その大統領は歴史に関する失言をした。

私は彼女は今回は失言したと考える。

ニュースでは、「gaffe」と「slip of the tongue」が比較的多く使われているようです。「put one’s foot in one’s mouth」は「子供に手を焼く」「ケーキには目がない」「歯がたたない」のようなイディオム（慣用句）ですので、使う相手を考える必要があります。
